How to grow chili peppers in pots: care, watering and harvest

Chili peppers are made for pots: they love heat, stay compact and a single plant gives dozens of pods. Sow them early because they are slow, then they need little care.

Wateringevery ~2 days in summer
Feedingevery ~14 days in season
Harvest120-150 days from seed, 70-90 from transplant

Pot and soil

A 20-25 cm (8-10 in) pot, 10-15 litres, per plant, with light, free-draining mix. Larger, vigorous varieties prefer 20 litres (5 gallons).

Light and position

Full sun and warmth: they thrive above 18 °C (64 °F) and stall below 12 °C (54 °F). Sow indoors in late winter and move outside once nights are mild.

Watering

About every 2 days in summer, letting the surface dry slightly between waterings. A little dryness while pods ripen makes them hotter, but never let the plant wilt.

Feeding

Every 2 weeks, with a potassium-rich feed from flowering on. Too much nitrogen gives lots of leaves and few peppers.

Harvest

When it's ready

Glossy, firm chillies in their final colour. Green ones are edible but milder.

How to harvest

Snip the stalk with scissors; pulling breaks branches. Frequent picking brings more fruit.

Common problems

Flowers drop without setting fruit

Too hot (above 32-35 °C / 90-95 °F), cold nights or too little water. It often sorts itself out once temperatures settle.

Curled leaves with tiny insects underneath

Aphids. Hose them off or use insecticidal soap.

Yellow leaves

Waterlogging or lack of nutrients. Check drainage and resume feeding.

FAQ

When are chili peppers ready to pick?

When they are glossy, firm and in their final colour (red, yellow, orange). Green ones are edible too, just milder.

Can I keep a chili plant over winter?

Yes, it's a perennial: cut it back by half, bring it into a bright spot indoors and water sparingly. Next spring it fruits earlier.

How do I pick chilies without damaging the plant?

Snip the stalk with scissors; pulling can break branches. Picking often encourages new fruit.
